Exercise During Pregnancy: How Much Is Too Much?

I ask this because I am an avid runner. When I was pregnant with my first child, I continued to run up until my third trimester. Granted, my distances werent so great, and I was getting slower each time I ran, but still I continued. My doctor approved of my exercise. I ended up giving birth to a healthy baby boy.

CG, Partners Complete Arctic Oil Recovery Exercise

FEATURE NEW YORK: Researchers who analyzed data from previous studies found people who exercised experienced a moderate reduction in their depressive symptoms compared to those who did other activities, such as using relaxation techniques, or received no treatment. This review provides some additional evidence that there may be some benefit (to exercise), Dr. Gillian Mead, the studys senior author from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, told Reuters Health. A 2009 review from the Cochrane Collaboration, an international organization that evaluates medical research, found similar results, but more studies looking at the link between exercise and depression have since been published. Wed become aware of some new trials in the area and in general the Cochrane review should be kept updated if there is new evidence that may lead to changes, Mead said. About one in ten Americans reports being depressed, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The most popular treatments for depression include antidepressant medications and psychotherapy.

In Defence Of Boring Snoring Mps

Snoring: When is it cause for concern?

There will be another one along in a minute.” I suspect it was in a similar spirit that Ian Katz, the new editor of Newsnight, sent his rogue tweet about last night’s edition of the BBC TWO current affairs programme. Presumably responding to praise, from some chum or other, Katz wrote: “Tnks (thanks) except for boring snoring Rachel Reeves.” Katz thought he had only sent it as a direct message (DM) to one other user. Disaster! He had actually pressed the wrong button, and off it went into the ether to thousands of followers, including Rachel Reeves, who at that point was leaving the Newsnight studio, having been a guest on the programme Katz edits. There but for the grace of God go any of us tweeting hacks. I should explain that Rachel Reeves MP is a Labour rising star and shadow minister for something or other to do with the economy. It is not an easy gig, what with boom and bust not having been ended, contrary to the claims made by her predecessors.

Stop Snoring Now

Snoring Couple in Bed

Smoking Smoking has numerous undesirable effects on the body. Most pertinent to OSA are the obstructions to the airway that cigarette smoking causes: swelling of the mucous membrane in the nose, swelling of the tissue in the throat, and blockage of the small vessels in the lungs. Therefore, add snoring to the list of reasons why you should stop smoking. Alcohol It is the partial collapse of the airway (breathing tube between nose, mouth and lungs) that is the immediate cause of snoring, and its complete collapse that is the immediate cause of apnea.

They wake up irritable, have headaches or are moody. And some people may even fall asleep during meetings, or at their computer at work, he said. Many possible solutions If a spouse might say (they are) snoring like a freight train or (they must) roll em at night, Bader might recommend the snorer make an appointment with a sleep specialist, then undergo a sleep study at a sleep clinic, such as All Saints Sleep Medicine Center. A sleep study determines if the person has sleep apnea, or just snores without the medical condition, and can determine how a doctor might treat the person. The patient might need to use a CPAP device when he or she sleeps, or a bi-level positive airway pressure mask, Bader said. Every day people tell me I cant do it. I wont use it, Bader said of the CPAP device.

And when you’re not blinking, the tears that are on your ocular surface just evaporate. You’re not distributing new, healthy, clean tears across the ocular surface.” Another thing that can contribute to the dry-eye feeling is the lack of oil being distributed to the eye via your eyelid. “When we blink, we push out a little bit of oil,” Starr said. “It’s critical for healthy tear film. … When you blink, you put out a little oil with each blink. So if you’re not blinking, you’re not getting the oil, your tears are evaporating and over the hours of a long workday that leads to significant dry eye.” Symptoms of dry eye include grittiness, a sandy feeling, a foreign body sensation, burning, redness, and sometimes tearing, and blurry vision.

Although some of his competitors also offer this type of LASIK eye surgery in New York, Dr. Stetson said the price that his clinic is offeringwhich in most cases is around 20 percent less than other locationsmakes Diamond Vision the clear choice for the iLASIK procedure.

‘healthy’ Vitamins To Avoid If You’re Ill

Dangerous supplements

UK guidance for everyone is not to take supplementary phosphorus of more than 250mg a day. A number of different studies, including one at the University Hospital, Sweden, have shown that a high intake of one type of vitamin A (retinol), thought to strengthen immunity against infections, is linked to lower bone mineral density, the marker for osteoporosis. In the study of 175 women aged between 28 and 74, those whose dietary intake of vitamin A was more than 1.5 mg a day had significantly lower bone density six to 14 per cent lower than women who reported less than 0.5 mg of the vitamin in their daily diets. Indeed, for every 1 mg increase in daily intake of retinol, risk for hip fracture increased by 68 per cent. Vitamin A may cause calcium to leach from the bones or prevent its entry into them; people with high intakes of vitamin A have also been found to have high levels of calcium in their blood. The current recommended nutrient intake is 0.7 mg a day for men and 0.6 mg a day for women. KIDNEY DISEASE: AVOID CALCIUM For those with any type of kidney problem and thats thought to be about one in five men and one in four women between 65 and 74 years of age calcium supplements need to be off the list.

Uganda: Where Is The Nutrition Bill?

Thanksgiving lunch has upbeat ag commissioner talking school nutrition

One can only wonder why a Bill of such a magnitude would take this long to be passed. Agnes Bako, the person in charge of nutrition at the health ministry, says nutrition issues are multi-sectoral. It was with this notion that they took time to consult and in the next two months, she says, she would have a report from the consultant. “But after the 2011 elections, there were a number of changes, the ministers were changed and we had to initiate them into the Bill afresh,” she says. Bako also believes the fact that this issue was shared by two ministries made the progress slow. “At least now that the agriculture ministry has taken it on, I am optimistic it will move faster,” she says. Way forward: Kataaha says 47% of all child deaths and almost a quarter of all maternal deaths in Uganda are associated with malnutrition and as such something has to be done.

NUTRITION PROGRAM PROVIDES FREE EDUCATION TO OKLAHOMA COUNTY FAMILIES AND YOUTH

If we say the peak season for strawberries, when they are at their most abundant and at their cheapest, is the tail end of March, let’s try to get all of our school districts to put strawberries on their menu the third week of March. So what’s your next move? As we continue to work out the kinks of getting healthier items and resolving the distribution issues, the next step, the last mile is this: We can get it on the tray but what are the barriers to the kids actually eating it and it not ending up in the garbage can? That is everything from presentation we’ve seen schools in Pinellas serve stir-fry in a Chinese takeout box and that makes all the difference in the world. The new nutrition standards really ratchet back the salt, so what are other spices that are healthier but add flavor?

Nutrition in Tulsa

Thats one of the reasons Oklahoma Countys Community Nutrition Education Program (CNEP) is busy every day of the work week. Our job is to help residents of Oklahoma County learn more about what makes up a healthy diet and how nutrition knowledge helps improve overall health, commented Debbie Bell, Area Coordinator for CNEP. The Oklahoma County CNEP organization is administrated through the OSU Cooperative Extension Service and provides free nutrition lessons to a variety of people in the community, including families, youth, senior citizens, and pregnant teens. In fact, anyone qualifying for a food assistance program is eligible to participate. This program helps individuals understand what good nutrition is and what steps they can take to eat healthier and how to get physically fit. With the link between good nutrition and good health growing stronger every day, Bell explained, teaching residents how to plan and prepare healthier meals is a solid investment in keeping health care costs down. CNEP helps individuals in both one-on-one and classroom settings to understand more about how to shop for and prepare healthy meals, how to read food labels, as well as methods for making the most of your food dollars and making certain food is stored and prepared safely. Were always pleased when someone tells us that because of what they have learned through CNEP, they now make better decisions when it comes to food choices, Bell responded.

Should women take Avodart to treat hair loss?

If you are pregnant, or planning to get pregnant, our medical advisers warn you to steer clear of the drug dutasteride (Avodart and generic) since it can cause birth defects, and the risks can continue for several months after youve stopped taking it. (Pregnant women dont even have to take it to be exposed to the risksjust handling the drug may cause abnormalities in male fetuses.) If pregnancy is not a concern for you, Avodart is still not a good first choice because theres little evidence showing that Avodart is effective in treating female pattern hair loss (FPHL). Approved to treat enlarged prostate in men, and often prescribed as an off label treatment for male and sometimes female pattern baldness, Avodart is a type of drug known as a hormone inhibitor that works by blocking type I and type II of the enzyme 5a reductase, which converts testosterone to dihydrotestosteronea hormone that contributes to hair loss in men, and to prostate enlargement. It also reduces dihydrotestosterone levels in the scalp, which slows hair loss and increases hair growth.

Extensive Hair Loss Following Second Round of Chemotherapy

Medical experts, however, said while there isnt any conclusive evidence that tap water is the direct cause they didnt rule out the countrys and the Gulfs treated water as one of the factors responsible for hair loss. They also said that hair loss and thinning is a result of multiple factors including hormonal imbalance, genetics, vitamin deficiency, stress and/or poor nutrition. Dr K. Balachandran, Specialist Dermatologist at Aster, Dubai, told Gulf News: There is no conclusive scientific study yet that says treated water is the direct cause of hair loss. Related Links ‘I’m plagued by pigmentation on my face’ He explained thyroid and hormonal imbalances are major causes for hair loss in women. Iron and Vitamin D deficiency as well as scalp infections also need to be considered [in hair loss diagnosis]. Women should not mistake genetically thinning hair for hair loss. Further hair tends to thin gradually with age, said Dr Balachandran.

Hair Loss Cause: 10 Reasons Why You’re Going Bald

DeBakey VA Medical Center Answer A. Docetaxel(Drug information on docetaxel) Discussion Despite the many possible adverse effects associated with chemotherapy, the potential for hair loss is one of the most worrisome for patients. When chemotherapy-induced alopecia (CIA) does occur, it is one of the singularly most troublesome aspects of modern oncologic intervention.[1,2] CIA leads to lowered self-esteem, poor body image, and lower overall quality of life. Both men and women with CIA frequently experience feelings of being exposed and judged.[3] One way to lessen the negative features of CIA is to utilize a computerized imaging program that enables patients to prepare themselves for how they will appear without hair, and that also demonstrates how good and natural they can look with a hair prosthesis in place.[4] Of course, there is a wide variability in the statistical likelihood of CIA, dependent on the specific drugs employed in the patients therapy.[5] Among the chemotherapeutic agents with the greatest probability of causing hair loss are: paclitaxel(Drug information on paclitaxel) (close to 90%), ifosfamide(Drug information on ifosfamide) (> 83%), epirubicin(Drug information on epirubicin) (> 70%), docetaxel (> 56%), and temozolomide (about 55%). By contrast, some chemotherapeutic agents cause hair loss uncommonly: capecitabine(Drug information on capecitabine) (6%), oxaliplatin(Drug information on oxaliplatin) (3%), carboplatin(Drug information on carboplatin) (2% to 3%), and cisplatin(Drug information on cisplatin) (< 1%). Other agents risks of CIA lie between these extremes or are not very well-defined. The class to which an agent belongs is, by and of itself, not sufficient to predict whether CIA is likely or unlikely to occur.

Global Gaps In High Blood Pressure Knowledge, Treatment

Researchers examined more than 140,000 adults in 17 countries and found that about 41 percent had consistently high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, but fewer than half of those people knew it. “We found that surprisingly many people didn’t realize their blood pressure was high,” lead author Clara Chow, from The George Institute for Global Health in Sydney, Australia, said. Less than a third of those aware of their condition and getting treatment had their blood pressure under control, with poor and rural populations faring the worst. “Whereas in high-income countries a larger proportion of people knew they had hypertension and were on treatment than people in low-income countries, the control problem was significant wherever you were,” Chow said. Normal blood pressure is defined as a systolic reading (the top number) of 120 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) or less and a diastolic reading (the bottom number) of 80 mm Hg or less.

Home blood pressure monitoring may improve control

At the end of the program, 71 percent of them had their blood pressure in the recommended range, compared to 53 percent of the usual care group. Those benefits remained after the pharmacist calls ceased, Margolis and her colleagues reported Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Six months after the intervention ended, 72 percent of telemonitoring patients still had their blood pressure under control, versus 57 percent of people in the comparison group. Participants who received telemonitoring were prescribed more hypertension drugs during the study. They also reported feeling more confident about being able to take care of themselves and made changes such as adding less salt to their food. “It’s kind of creating a feedback loop where the patient is measuring their blood pressure and forwarding that information to the healthcare team, and the healthcare team is able to interpret that information and feed back information to the patient about how they can achieve better blood pressure control,” Margolis told Reuters Health. The remaining questions, Uhlig said, are if blood pressure reductions will be maintained years down the line, and if people who had the intervention will go on to develop fewer heart conditions.

Blood pressure drug may quicken TB treatment

After four months of therapy, half of the lung tissue samples from mice receiving verapamil had zero bacteria counts. All tissue samples in mice not on verapamil remained positive for TB. Verapamil is known to make bacteria more susceptible to antibiotics and killing by immune cell macrophages. The precise workings of the drugs effects on bacteria remain unknown.

High blood pressure takes increasing toll in Cambodia, developing world

image

Dr. Sin Somuney, executive director of MediCam, an umbrella organization for charitable groups in Cambodia, says getting international donors to address hypertension has been a challenge. They seem to think its a country problem that is, a problem Cambodia should solve on its own he says. Infectious diseases, which can easily spread to other countries, get more attention from international organizations, he contends. And Sin adds that because hypertension almost always strikes adults, he can’t raise money with pictures of sick babies and children. Tim Johnston, who just finished up a stint as a health specialist in Cambodia for the World Bank, says the time has come for major international organizations to focus on non-communicable diseases. If you start now on prevention (of high blood pressure), the cost later will be less, Johnston said.
